Overlooking the Pink Lake just outside of the coastal town of Esperance, which is snuggled in to the Recherche Archipelago in Western Australia's south-east, is our cottage on the property we know as Loch Hill. A Land for Wildlife property, this small patch of paradise is mostly native bush, with trails winding up hills and down valleys through red-flowering templetonia, yellow wattle and Rottnest Island pines. New Holland Honeyeaters chatter outside the windows of the small cottage, which was built using as much recycled material as possible. Jarrah floorboards from WA's south-west provide contrast to the window frames, doors and furniture made from American oak, tulip poplar, hickory and loblolly pine from the family's farm on the Choptank River, in Maryland, USA. This is the property where our children spent their early childhood, and is now available for other to enjoy.
A wine on the verandah, meditation on the deck, a short drive to 11 Mile Beach: it is the perfect place to restore the soul and spirits.
